University of North Alabama Acquires IPv4 Addresses

The University of North Alabama (UNA) has strengthened its network infrastructure by acquiring its own IPv4 address space with assistance from Brander Group Inc., an IPv4 brokerage and network infrastructure services provider.

The transaction gives UNA direct ownership and greater administrative control over an important component of its digital infrastructure. Rather than depending exclusively on Internet addresses assigned by an Internet service provider, the university can now manage dedicated IPv4 resources according to its own long-term networking requirements.

Greater Control Over Critical Network Resources

For organizations with expanding technology needs, relying on ISP-provided IP addresses can introduce limitations when infrastructure requirements change. The continued scarcity of available IPv4 addresses has also made obtaining dedicated address space an increasingly important consideration for institutions managing substantial networks.

Brander Group worked alongside UNA’s information technology leadership throughout the acquisition and transfer process. Its involvement covered the various stages required to obtain the IPv4 resources and complete the associated registration and transfer procedures.

According to Ethan G. Humphres (’02, ’19), CIO and Assistant Vice President of Information Technology Services at the University of North Alabama, the university chose to purchase its own IP address space to move beyond the constraints associated with ISP-assigned addresses.

Humphres said the university’s experience with Brander Group included responsive communication, knowledgeable guidance, competitive pricing, and assistance throughout the registration and transfer process. He also noted that owning its own address space has provided UNA with greater control, flexibility, stability, and independence in managing its network infrastructure.

The university’s experience demonstrates how institutions can use the secondary IPv4 market to obtain address resources while establishing greater control over their network operations.

Supporting Higher Education Network Needs

The UNA engagement reflects Brander Group’s broader work with educational institutions and enterprise organizations that need to navigate limited IP resources and complicated transfer requirements.

IPv4 transactions can involve multiple administrative and technical considerations. Brander Group’s approach focuses on helping clients navigate those requirements while emphasizing transaction accuracy, compliance, clear communication, and efficient execution.

By acquiring and managing its own IPv4 address space, UNA has added another level of independence to its network strategy and positioned itself to accommodate future infrastructure requirements with greater flexibility.
